The Metropolitan Museum of Art's celebrated Mangareva male figure is currently on view in Paris at the Musée du quai Branly.
The exhibition, Mangareva, panthéon de Polynésie, "brings together the only known works to date from Mangareva, a small island in the Gambier Archipelago ... a dozen statues, anthropomorphic or not, that have never been shown to the general public," according the museum's Web site. Not all in one place, at any rate.
A catalog (in French, 79 p.) published in conjunction with the exhibition is available for consultation in the Goldwater Library.
The exhibition is on view through May 2009, after which it travels to the Musée de Tahiti et des Iles.
