The Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas has recently expanded the presentation of Ethiopian Christian objects from its permanent collection with the opening of a new gallery space at the eastern entrance to the Michael C. Rockefeller Wing.
Left: Processional Cross, 16th century (ca. 1500) (Rogers Fund, 1999 (1999.103)); right: Ewost'atéwos and Eight Disciples, late 17th century (Louis V. Bell Fund, 2006 (2006.98))
The display is augmented by several important loan objects, including an eighteenth-century altar cloth from the British Museum; and three mixed-media canvases by the contemporary Ethiopian artist Elias Sime, courtesy of the Zoma Contemporary Art Center.
In addition to installing the gallery Alisa LaGamma has added a new page on Ethiopian cultural heritage for the Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History.
